Workshops Based on Indian Indigenous Art

Discover the rich traditions of Indian tribal and folk art, using authentic techniques to create stunning cultural artworks.

A. Gond art workshop at the Monash Council Library at Glen Waverley

Participants created their own A4 size Gond Painting to take home with them. All materials were provided.

Gond paintings bear a remarkable likeness aboriginal art from Australia as both styles use dots to create the painting.

According to the Gond belief system, all things are inhabited by a spirit and, consequently, are sacred. Gond paintings are a reflection of man’s close connection with his natural surroundings. While a majority of Gond paintings do take inspiration from nature, it isn’t the only source of ideas. They also turn to the myths and legends of India or showcase images from their daily lives and dreams in their art.

B. Gond art workshop at the Monash Council Library at Mulgrave
C. Madhubani / Melbani Art Workshop at the Springvale Library under the Libraries After Dark Program held by The Dandenong Council libraries25th August 2022

This workshop was run by Rashmi Gore in her own Indo-Australian fusion style Melbani where elements of Madhubani art are used in context with the flora, fauna, human life & surroundings in Melbourne. Participants were taught the elements or Madhubani art & its brief history. Using that knowledge participants draw & paint from the reference painting of original art created by Rashmi or they create a unique painting of their own as well. This workshop added much-needed warmth to a cold wintry night. You can see the fantastic work done by the participants in the video. Workshop was held at the Springvale Library under the Libraries After Dark program organized by the Dandenong Council Libraries during winter.

D. Warli art workshop at the Springvale library under the Libraries After Dark Program – August 2022

Warli art is a tribal art form from India which dates back to Neolothic times. The Warlis or Varlis are an indigenous tribe or Adivasis, living in mountainous and coastal areas of the states of Maharashtra-Gujarat border and surrounding areas. They have their own animistic beliefs, customs and traditions. However, as a result of acculturation they have also adopted many Hindu beliefs.

Warli art workshop at the Springvale library under the Libraries After Dark Program organised by the Dandenong Libraries program – adding warmth to a cold wintry night. This workshop was run by Rashmi Gore on Indian Indigenous Warli art in her Indo-Australian fusion style & in the process participants draw & paint from the reference painting of original art created by Rashmi or they create a unique painting of their own. 3. Urban Sketching

This involves drawing, sketching or Painting on location or outdoors & not in a studio. It’s about telling a story of our surroundings or travels. Students are taught how to capture something from 3D real life (not from photos or imagination) and present it on a 2D surface. Presenting the world from your personal direct observation. This is a compulsory activity and at least one such urban sketching class is held every year. We sketch in schools, parks, reserves etc places which are safe for students to be in. This class is very much loved by our students as it’s almost an art picnic.

Parents are required to accompany their child to the respective outdoor location & be present during the entire duration of the activity. This is also an excellent bonding opportunity for parents & children. Parents are welcome to participate in the sketching and discover some untapped potential at no extra charge.
